Abayomi Mighty, Nigeria’s leading 2027 presidential contender, has condemned the rampant defections among political parties, describing it as a reflection of ideological bankruptcy and a major hindrance to Nigeria’s democratic maturity.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, Abayomi Mighty stated that political defections have reduced Nigeria’s democracy to an opportunistic marketplace, devoid of loyalty to principles or party manifestos.
He said, “Defection has become a business strategy rather than an ideological decision. Many politicians defect, not because of policy disagreements but for personal survival, political protection, or access to resources.”
Abayomi Mighty emphasised that the endless cycle of defections weakens political institutions, destabilises governance structures, and breeds a culture of impunity, where public officials believe loyalty is negotiable at will.
Abayomi Mighty stated that under his presidency, political parties will be strengthened through electoral and constitutional reforms that ensure ideological discipline, internal democracy, and structured policy continuity.
“Democracy thrives on parties with clear ideologies, disciplined membership, and consistent policies. Rampant defections are evidence of the lack of conviction in the system. Nigeria must rise beyond political prostitution to leadership anchored on truth, integrity, and service,” he declared.
He concluded by calling on Nigerians to demand ideological consistency and principled leadership from political actors, noting that a nation without political discipline is a nation without developmental direction.
“My vision is to build a political culture where ideas matter more than alliances, and service is greater than survival,” Abayomi Mighty affirmed.
