Ahead of the 2027 general elections, stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Nasarawa State have firmly rejected the adoption of consensus candidates for the various positions to be contested in the state.

This followed an alleged adoption of a particular aspirant as the party’s consensus candidate for the governorship election in the state.

The PDP stakeholders under the aegis of Concerned PDP Stakeholders Forum, led by its chairman, Jibrin Idris-Ibrahim, frowned at the situation during a press briefing in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, on Tuesday.

Idris-Ibrahim described the alleged move by the party as illegitimate and an undemocratic process, adding that such an action could threaten the internal unity of the party in the state.

The Concerned PDP Stakeholders Forum, with members comprising elders, youths and women across the 13 local government areas of the state, further described the development as misleading, self-serving, and lacking due consultations with key party stakeholders.

He said, “It has come to our attention that a few self-serving individuals, claiming to speak on behalf of the PDP in Nasarawa State, met and have purportedly adopted a particular aspirant as the party’s consensus candidate ahead of the forthcoming primaries.

“Let it be categorically stated here and now that this so-called adoption is false, undemocratic, and does not reflect the will of the majority of party members across the state.

“We reject in totality this charade and manipulation, which is clearly orchestrated to mislead the public and impose candidates through the back door.

“The PDP is a party founded on the ideals of democracy, inclusiveness, and fairness. The process leading to the emergence of candidates must be transparent, credible, and in accordance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.

“We therefore insist that no aspirant has been adopted by the PDP Nasarawa State Chapter as the sole candidate for any elective position. The purported adoption lacks legitimacy, credibility, and the backing of the party organs or wider stakeholders.”

The chairman of the group further urged the State Working Committee of the party to disregard any such move and publicly reaffirm its commitment to providing a level playing field for all aspirants.

He therefore tasked all aspirants to continue their consultations and engagements with the party members in peace and mutual respect, while preparing for the primary election in line with the party’s guidelines.

“The 2027 elections are crucial. We must not allow internal sabotage or desperate schemes to derail our progress.

“The PDP in Nasarawa State belongs to all of us, not to a clique or privileged few. The journey to reclaiming leadership requires openness, unity, and adherence to democratic values,” Idris-Ibrahim added.
