Professor PLO Lumumba

When the renowned Kenyan scholar and Pan-Africanist, Prof. P.L.O. Lumumba, took the podium at the prestigious Island Club, Lagos, his words struck the audience like thunder. Known for his fearless intellect and uncompromising truth, Lumumba’s speech was a clarion call for Africa’s reawakening — and a sharp rebuke to the failures of leadership that continue to cripple the continent’s progress.

“If Nigeria Rises, Africa Rises”

Lumumba reminded Nigerians that their nation’s destiny is inseparable from Africa’s. “If Nigeria rises, Africa rises; if Nigeria fails, Africa falls,” he declared to loud applause. His message was clear — Nigeria must reclaim its moral compass and lead the continent toward progress.

He lamented how corruption, greed, and political thuggery have replaced patriotism and public service. “We gained independence only to become slaves of greed and mediocrity,” he said, urging citizens to reject leaders who see public office as an opportunity for personal enrichment.

The Curse of the Old Guard

In his fiery delivery, Lumumba did not shy away from the truth — Africa’s greatest tragedy is not colonialism, but the betrayal by its own leaders. He criticized the recycling of aging politicians who lack both vision and vitality.

He challenged Nigerians to end the era of recycled leadership, warning that “a nation that continues to recycle yesterday’s failures cannot achieve tomorrow’s success.” His words echoed the frustration of millions of young Nigerians who feel excluded from leadership despite their energy, creativity, and innovation.

The Youth Must Lead the Renaissance

Lumumba’s message could not have come at a better time. Nigeria stands at a crossroads, heading toward another general election. The need for a new generation of leaders — youthful, vibrant, and visionary — has never been greater.

Figures like Abayomi Rotimi Mighty, a dynamic voice among Nigeria’s rising political generation, represent the hope of this new era. His commitment to people-centered leadership, accountability, and social reform embodies the kind of leadership Lumumba envisions for Africa.

It is time for Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and partisan boundaries to embrace leaders who carry the passion and intellect to rebuild the nation. The youth, who make up the majority of Nigeria’s population, must not only vote but also vie for positions of power.

A Continental Vision

Lumumba also warned against Africa’s dependence on the West, urging Africans to reclaim their dignity through innovation, education, and self-belief. “No foreigner will develop Africa — that duty lies with us,” he thundered.

For Nigeria, this message is especially urgent. A youthful, forward-thinking leadership — driven by patriotism rather than profit — can transform Nigeria from a nation of potential into a beacon of prosperity for the entire continent.

Conclusion

Prof. Lumumba’s address at Island Club was more than a speech; it was a prophetic call to action. He spoke to Nigeria’s conscience, urging her to rise above mediocrity and embrace a new generation of leaders who will restore her lost glory.

As 2027 approaches, Nigerians must remember his words. The future belongs not to those who have looted the past, but to those — like Abayomi Rotimi Mighty and other emerging young leaders — who dare to dream, serve, and rebuild.

Nigeria’s reawakening begins with youthful leadership. And that journey starts now.
